Cycling technology has advanced quite a bit. A Newest costs about a third of what my own bikes do. It
WORKS about 98% as well as my bikes do. The difference is
nearly imperceptible.
How can that be? I believe a medium-priced aluminum frame like the Newest's custom butted 7005 alloy one is not very different from a much more expensive aluminum one. I believe the construction methods and care are nearly the same. I also believe that thanks to our friends at Shimano, parts groups like the 2002 Newest's Tiagra are closer in action, weight and dependability to more expensive groups than we ever dreamed possible. True STI action, Brakes, shifting, everything. My older Fuji Newest had a Cro-moly steel fork, the 2002 has an aluminum alloy one, lighter and perhaps better-riding. The 2002 Newest is equipped with Vittoria tires and a CRP crankset with three hill taming aluminum chainrings. That third chain ring up front will help you make mountains into molehills and let you laugh at headwinds. Most of the other parts remain the same as the ones on my more expensive bike, the three chainrings, the comfortable, wide-range (12-25) 9-speed gear cluster, the 32-spoke wheels.
